Welcome to my very first blog post. I am very new to blogging, and a bit of a technophobe, but I felt inspired to write, and decided to go for it!!
If you have managed to see my website (if it has finally gone live, my poor web guy!!) you will know a little bit about me.
I have been a Dentist for over twenty years, and continue to work in dentistry, but decided to follow my passion for nutrition after my sister became ill.
My sister Clair, developed post-viral fatigue, which progressed to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and finally to multiple sclerosis several years ago.
She is my rock. She has supported me throughout my life, and yet there I was with some medical training, but unable to help her in any way.
It was stressful, frustrating, and worrying because her condition was gradually worsening, and we, her family, all felt helpless.
She attended numerous doctors’ appointments and trawled the Internet attempting to find a diagnosis. Could it be fibromyalgia? Was it Lyme’s disease, was it ‘ yuppie flu’. Did she have post-natal depression (her daughter was two at the time)? Was stress playing a part? Well many of us are aware of the juggling act of a working mum – rushing out for nursery drop off, a busy day at work, relying on public transport in an attempt to arrive for nursery collection on time (to avoid being charged), occupying a tired, hungry child, to prevent them from falling asleep on the journey home, and attempting a calm bedtime routine so that sleep might be a possibility, throwing together some food so that you and your husband might eat, falling into bed exhausted and then up at the crack of dawn to repeat the process. Fewer of us have families that live locally, or can help with childcare. So yes maybe there was an element of stress.
As her family, we were all keen to help, but there appeared to be no solution.
She was finally diagnosed with MS in 2012. This was a devastating blow, but Clair was almost relieved. This proved she wasn’t going mad and she wasn’t a hypochondriac. She had her diagnosis. Then the day-to-day reality of her illness finally hit her hard, and continues to do so. I will talk more about Clair’s journey in subsequent blogs; about her own desire to enhance her situation, her ‘off days’ and about the support she has received from local groups and charities.
Signs and symptoms are our body’s way of informing us that something is not right. I believe that as individuals we know our bodies better than anyone else, and we can start ‘listening’ to it. Addressing our own health concerns, signs and symptoms, and undertaking nutrition and lifestyle changes could be pivotal in halting or reversing disease progression. As an individual you can be instrumental in controlling your own health. Taking ‘your health into your hands’. If the body is provided with the nutrients it needs to function well – it hopefully will!
A dental patient of mine today told me he was no longer diabetic, as he had reversed his type II diabetes through nutrition. I grinned from ear to ear and we high-fived!!! This is what makes my heart sing!
I believe that nutritional and lifestyle modifications earlier in Clair’s journey might have prevented the progression to MS. I still live with the belief that her disease will be reversed, and she will be free from MS.
Maybe you have a few niggles, some digestive discomfort, feel tired all the time, or are stressed, or depressed, suffer with headaches or insomnia? These may be signs of an imbalance in your body. You could ignore it, it might get better; but would you ignore your car’s low oil warning light? Problems will develop for you car if the oil is not topped up, and similarly more problems might develop if you do not address your body’s symptoms, which are your warning signs.
